Volunteers serve a critical role in American Family Housing. Each year volunteers help further AFH’s Mission and Vision by providing services to the homeless in our communities. Our events and annual goals could not be met without the selfless generosity of persons who volunteer their time and expertise to help those in need. There are many ways for you to get involved. Homeless families and individuals face many challenges and deeply rooted societal problems that can only be solved if all we work together. Here are some of the ways you can help make a difference in the lives of our neighbors and make the world a better place for all.
Holiday & Special Events
We need your time, talents, and caring hearts to bring happiness to AFH clients during the holidays and special events.
Ribs, Pigs and Watermelon – One of our most popular ways to volunteer is participating in our AFH’s signature fundraiser: Ribs, Pigs and Watermelons Pro BBQ Competition, Music Festival and Car Show (RPW). This 3-day mega-event held at Huntington Beach State Park requires several hundred volunteers and is a great way for individuals, corporations, and clubs to get involved and have a lot of fun at the same time. This year’s event features a full day Reggae Festival on Saturday and throughout the weekend will feature great BBQ, Kid’s activities, live bands and a car show. Once you’ve served a shift as a volunteer at RPW you are free to spend the rest of the weekend soaking up sun and BBQ as our guest. Click here to sign up for a shift!
Valentines Day, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day Crafts – Help the children in our programs show their love for their parents by assisting them as they makeValentine’s Day cards and/or prepare treatsand gifts for their parents on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Easter Picnic – Help hide Easter eggs, serve lunch and supervise children’s activities at our Easter Egg Hunt picnic in April. Click here to sign up for this annual event.
Back to School Drive – American Family Housing needs volunteers to organize our annual Back to School Backpack and a school supplies drive. If you’d like to donate items or help in other ways with this drive, please Click here for more information.
Community Thanksgiving Dinner –
Unfortunately, we have filled all 240 of this year’s positions for Thanksgiving Day meal service. It’s wonderful to have so many volunteers! If you are still interested, there are three other ways to help at Thanksgiving. We still need donations of money and/or food items. Specifically, we need, green beans, boxed instant mashed potatoes, pies (apple or pumpkin) and frozen turkeys. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated! If you would like to help us with another rewarding project this Thanksgiving we can use help with our Albertson’s meal drive. At stores in both Huntington Beach and Westminster, checkers will be soliciting cash donations at the registers to purchase complete Thanksgiving meals that American Family Housing will be delivering to families on the Monday and Tuesday evenings just prior to Thanksgiving. We need help at the stores passing out flyers and encouraging folks to donate at the registers from Nov 12th through Nov 21st . We also need help driving the Thanksgiving meals (frozen) to the families on Monday Nov 21st and Tuesday Nov 22nd.

Santa’s Helpers – Each year AFH receives hundreds of donated toys for distribution to families in need during the holidays. If you would like to learn more about how you can help to sort the toys, supervise distribution or do some gift wrapping. Click here to sign up.
Feed the Hungry – This ongoing event provides year-round volunteer opportunities. Help prepare or serve meals to our clients and their children on Monday or Tuesday evenings during our adult and children’s program sessions. Each sign-up slot is a commitment of approximately 2.5 hours (from 5:30 to 8:00pm). We are also looking for individuals and organizations that are willing to provide the food items for these meals and/or to cook these meals. American Family Housing believes we can never do enough to promote learning and personal growth for children. Volunteers are needed every week to assist us with music, arts and crafts, Scouting, homework tutoring, reading, personal goal setting, and games for the youths we serve.
Youth Programs Helpers – Working alongside AFH staff during our children’s programs and events is a very popular way to serve. Persons interested in volunteering for children’s activities should contact us at 714.897.3221 x121 to learn more about these assignments.
Office Assistant Positions- American Family Housing is always looking for volunteers to serve as administrative assistants working in our administrative offices. Office duties can include data entry, stuffing envelopes, answering and making phone calls, organizing files and creating spreadsheets. Group Volunteer Activities
Volunteer Groups – If you belong to an organization, company or family that wishes to participate as a group for service projects we encourage you to Click here and complete a Group Volunteer Application. By doing so, you’ll begin to receive email notices advising you of community service opportunities at AFH for your team. Group opportunities can range from painting a house to participating as a group manning positions at our annual Ribs, Pigs and Watermelon BBQ competition & fundraiser.
We are also looking for organizations, companies and families interested in coordinating and organizing projects and fundraisers to help AFH. Group sizes can range from 100 members to a single Boy or Girl Scout working on their rank advancement service project. The group service projects we typically need help with include: facilities construction or repair projects, fundraising campaigns, basic needs drives (i.e. personal hygiene items, diapers, household goods), and carpentry projects like building picnic tables, benches or flower boxes. Life Skills Seminars
Share Your Knowledge – Speakers and mentors are needed for monthly meetings to assist our adult clients in developing a sense of self-worth, hope and independence. Topics of interest to our clients include career building, stress management, parenting, financial literacy, personal empowerment and others.Our client programs provide opportunities for working professionals, educators, counselors and social workers to help our clients develop life skills, pursue new goals and be motivated by positive role models. On the Job Learning – Interns at American Family Housing are trained in a professional work environment while gaining skills to provide quality services in the community. We are always in need of energetic, active individuals looking for hands-on training and experience with Orange County’s largest non-profit organization serving the homeless. Available intern positions vary, but may include Social Worker (case management), Counseling, Accounting, Public Relations, Fundraising and Communications. Development Fundraising Team
Event Planning – If you enjoy brainstorming and think you’d like to participate in event planning, this is for you. Join our team, serve as a committee member and participate in the planning and coordination of our organization’s annual marketing and fundraising campaigns and events. Once you have signed up for a specific volunteer event or assignment, you will need to fill out a Volunteer Agreement Form and bring it with you on your first day of service. American Family Housing is now utilizing a Volunteer Management System to improve efficiencies. It only takes about 3 minutes to add yourself to our volunteer database by completing an online American Family Housing Volunteer Application (below). This Volunteer Application is not required before signing-up for our large events, but by filling out a Volunteer Application, you will be the first to receive recruitment notices for all upcoming volunteer opportunities. Entering your profile in our database also helps us match you to projects and activities you might enjoy.
